The story behind the image
On our way to the Scottish North Sea Coast we aimed for an overnight stop in Ballater. Enroute, right next to the A93, we considered visiting Balmoral Castle, the Scottish residence of the Royal Family during summer since 1852. We decided against a visit because visitors got to see just one room of the castle – the Ballroom – which made the price of £7.00 per person a bit, well, hefty. The car park is £0.70, so two adults and one car are £14.70. And these were the 2005 prices! At the time of writing, the official homepage mentions a rate of £18.50 (about 22 Euro/23 US Dollar) per adult. Which is still too much in my view.
But wait! While you are at Balmoral, you can visit the beautiful Crathie Kirk opposite the castle at the A93, overlooking the Glen Gelder.
