The story behind the image
My grandparents had built this bungalow to get away from the ongoing war that had hit Kiel – their hometown – in Northern Germany with venegance in 1943. They found peace in Malente-Gremsmühlen, about 40 kilometers outside of Kiel. A place to raise their kids, and closer to the rest of the family. During autumn 1943 they had moved to Malente, at first to temporary home for children with their parents. Construction began in January 1944 and were completed in summer. Then the very cold winter 1944/45 came.
This image from the family archive was shot in January 1945 by my grandfather, Otto Schweim. On a sunny morning, he had used the opportunity to take photos of the kids and Mrs. Irmgard, the nanny, while discovering the icy surroundings of the house.
The original print is just 5.7 x 5.7 cm, so this is probably the best quality one might get from it. I restored the image to match the likely look of the photo my grandfather had in mind when he shot this fantastic image.
