The story behind the image

My mother had always been attracted to art and artworks as her parents had collected a few paintings of artists living in Northern Germany. In the late 1980s and throughout the 1990s she created a number of paintings herself, which I inherited after her death.

Today I share another one that I really like, showing Paris in France during winter, namely the Pont des Arts (in the front) and Pont Neuf (in the back) seen from the Port du Louvre.

It is interesting that this piece really combines several favorites of her in a single painting:

  1. Her love for France and all things French, probably because her grandmother was born and had been raised in Schlettstadt (Selestat) in Alsace, France.
  2. The city of Paris, where she probably would have lived if the circumstances were different. When she was younger, she was (understandably) not brave enough for such a bold move.
  3. The arts – expressed by picking the Pont des Arts seen from the Louvre, a huge museum in the city center.
  4. Pont Neuf – probably inspired by the 1991 movie Les amants du Pont-Neuf (lit. The lovers of Pont Neuf), a bitter sweet romance which had been one of her favorites when it was released. Some scenes show Paris in winter, which is another hint at the movie.

My mother died on the 22nd December 2004 at the age of just 62.

Thinking of you today.
