The story behind the image

Large panorama images are truly magic. You can zoom in and dive into the scene without losing the details. It’s almost as if you’d be standing there, right now.

This image, composed from six image files, shows Spiaggia di Funtanazza, the beach of the Colonia Marina di Funtanazza, a holiday retreat erected in the 1950s for the families of the nearby mine-workers of Montevecchio and Ingurtosu.

The retreat had been inaugurated in 1956 and operated until 1983, surviving the closure of the mines. It featured Tennis courts, a big public swimming pool, soccer fields, and of course, this beautiful beach. Actually, it still is a nice spot for a vacation today.

However, the holiday retreat is in ruins today. There had been plans to revive the business, but there had been very little progress in the actual execution of such plans. Probably noone is willing to invest here as there is no guarantee for success, and the investment has to be serious. Potential issues could be the long and difficult journey to the location and the general lack of opportunities for sightseeing (other than the mines and ruins of Montevecchio and Ingurtosu.)
