The story behind the image

A while ago I shared an awesome image by photo pioneer Albert Giesler in Eutin from 1893. It shows the visitor platform and fishing bridge at the Ugleisee near Eutin in Germany.

Now I found this print by Friedrich Henning from Plön, a town between Eutin and Kiel. It is undated, but most likely to be shot between 1910 and 1912.

This print shows that the place has not changed at all over a period of almost two decades – just the furniture has been re-arranged. It is even more remarkable that this place exists almost unchanged today. The furniture has been removed but the benches are still there, and it’s still a place for getting carried away by dreams.

Photographer Friedrich Henning (1835-1921) was a native of Plön, and one of the established photographers in the region. At the age of 31, he married Juliane Dorothea Ernestine Bendt (1846-1919). Ten years later, their son Friedrich Henning (1877-1942) was born who also became a photographer and took over the business. It’s not clear who actually shot this image. It could be either Friedrich senior (as a work late in his life) or Friedrich junior (with his career in full swing.)
