The story behind the image
In 2007 we visited the North Sea coast in Germany. We picked up our rental car in Hamburg and drove to St. Peter Ording, a popular summer destination with magnificent beaches and stunning stilted buildings.
On our way towards St. Peter we stopped by in Tönning, a beautiful historic town at the river Eider which is close enough to the North Sea to operate a harbour.
When we entered the town we passed this historic fish trawler from Tönning – the Pornstrom TÖN4 – which was located on a meadow near the Eider. It had been gifted to the state of Schleswig-Holstein in 1993 and got restored and put on permanent exhibition in Tönning.
It shows the deep link of Tönning to fishery and acts as a reminder of the hard daily work of the crews that set out to the North Sea to catch crabs and fish. There still are a couple of ships active in Tönning that can be watched around noon when they return with their catch.
