The story behind the image

In 2000, we did a road trip through Italy. When we started in Munich, we really did not have a concrete plan where we would stay. We had some ideas, sure, but we had not booked any hotels or B&Bs. To be on the safe side, we took a tent and sleeping bags.

We entered Tuscany from the North-West, coming from Cinque Terre where we visited Lucca. About 20 kilometers north of Lucca we found the medieval pedestrian bridge Ponte della Maddalena (aka Ponte del Diavolo, the devil’s bridge) that crosses the river Serchio at Borgo a Mozzano. While we were a bit disappointed by the view, we were stunned by the fact that it was first built in the 12th century. We could almost sense the history around this place.

Nice.
