The story behind the image
This historic postcard sent in June 1904 shows the beautiful lake Dieksee in Gremsmühlen in Germany.
A maid stands on the pier crouched over the water with a piece of cloth in her hands. Was she about to wash something in the calm and mirror-like lake?
It’s a peaceful scene that shows why tourism in and around Malente and Gremsmühlen was rising steadily. People from the next big German cities – Hamburg, Hannover, Berlin – wanted to escape the hectic, noise, dirt, and pollution, they had at home and enjoy tranquility in nature. It had become more affordable to travel, and the area around Malente offered what the tourists were looking for. Visitors reported home what they had found – which attracted further visitors.
