The story behind the image
We stayed for just one night at the Bryce Canyon National Park (or rather, at the Bryce View Lodge right next to the park entrance.) We went to the park in the late afternoon and again in the morning. (Personally, I think our morning hike was much better because the rocks were nicely illuminated by the sun and not dipped into shadow like in the late afternoon, but YMMV.)
After we left the park we headed for Springdale which is right next to the Zion National Park. However, our travel guidebook mentioned the beauty of the Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park. These smaller State Parks are quite attractive, be it the Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park in California, the Goblin Valley State Park or this park in Utah.
This park lies twelve miles off U.S. Highway 89, near Kanab. Contrasted by blue skies, juniper and pinon pines, and steep red cliffs, the park is a wonderful place for camping, taking photographs, or just relaxing and playing in the sand. The sand is indeed coral pink, and the dunes are a spectacular sight.
A detour well worth it!
