Shoulder of Scotland, Peterhead

The story behind the image

We had slept exceptionally well, and in the morning we took another long walk along the nearby beach. The Scots call this stretch of the country The Shoulder of Scotland because the coast makes a bend here, which – on the map faintly – resembles the shoulder of a person.

It was beautiful even if was too cold for taking a swim despite the high summer season. (Blame us lame mid-Europeans for not being able to cope with these temperatures.)

By the way, we stayed at the Rattray Head Lighthouse B&B, the former houses for the lighthouse wards. Back in 2005, the B&B was operated by Rob and Val, who were super friendly, and our room was clean and very quiet. I’m not sure what happened to the business though. It seemed to have been positioned as an Eco Hostel for a number of years but was listed for sale in 2021.

Anyway, it remains a great location with a beautiful beach.
