The story behind the image

Finding an accommodation around Peterhead in Scotland posed a challenge for us. No, not a challenge. Make that ‘a problem’. Peterhead is a town with a working harbour, not very spectacular but pretty busy. And all the busy workers apparently occupied all the hotels and B&Bs in town. After some asking-around (one might call that an ‘odyssey’) we finally found an accommodation for the night at the Rattray Head Lighthouse B&B.

We did not stay directly at the lighthouse though, which was built in 1895 still operates as automated lighthouse today, but at the former houses for the lighthouse wards. Back in 2005, the B&B was operated by Rob and Val, who were super friendly, and our room was clean and very quiet. Pure relaxation. We walked along the endless sandy beach, also known as ‘The Shoulder of Scotland’.

When we approached the beach in the late afternoon, I took this unusual image of the lighthouse as it seemed to lurk over the dunes of the beach. I call it unusual because the lighthouse has been built entirely into the sea but this image suggests a location on the mainland.

An awesome location.
