The story behind the image

The Colonia Marina di Funtanazza at the west coast of Sardinia in Italy was a holiday retreat for the families of the workers of the nearby mines of Montevecchio and Ingurtosu.

Upon first glance, you just notice the bad shape of the board walk. Closer inspection reveals paint falling off and rusty rails on the main building. Later you realize that most windows have been destroyed or removed. Then it becomes obvious that the building has been destroyed almost completely over time. Just the structure and some blinders seem to have survived. And, funnily enough, the wordmark of the retreat.

The retreat is located in the center of Sardinia’s Costa Verde – the Green Coast – and if you are in the region and have a bit of time, I suggest driving all the way down to the retreat and the beach. It’s a winded road but you will also pass the mines, Montevecchio and Ingurtosu. It left me speechless to see all those places that – combined – are basically one huge lost place.

We found the Colonia Marina di Funtanazza pretty bizarre – and that should be ‘pretty’ and ‘bizarre’ at the same time, especially for photographers. When you visit the retreat, it may be further detoriated (and be even more bizarre) or have been turned into a shiny spot for wealthy tourists seeking privacy and tranquility. Either way, it will be interesting to follow the development.
