A93, Scottish Highlands (II)

The story behind the image

We headed from St. Andrews in Scotland through the Grampian Mountains towards Ballater where we hoped to find a nice accommodation (and – much to our surprise – we succeeded!)

But the real highlight is the Royal Deeside and Scotland’s Castle Trail. The route carries this name for a reason: there are so many castles that you can easily get confused. Dalnaglar, Dalmunzie, Braemar, and Balmoral which is best known as one of the royal castles. It’s absolutely stunning and well worth spending time.

Coming from the south, your gateway to the Grampian Mountains is the A93 which leads you also through Glenshee, one of the few skiing areas in Scotland! Yes, they have snow up here, and they say that during winter you can even go downhill. Some say that the ride is not very long, but hey – at least you can ski or get some practice before heading to Austria or Switzerland for some real tracks.

Anyway, the trip along A93 presented countless photo opportunities just like this one. I like that the car and road seem to be dwarfed by the surrounding nature. This highlights the size and beauty of nature which is the true ruler up here in the Scottish Highlands.

An iconic image.
