Neidpath Castle, Peebles, Scotland

The story behind the image

When we were in Edinburgh, the rain had begun. It seemed to rain for hours. We waited in Cafés. We visited galleries. Museums. Went shopping. But the rain would not stop. How unfair!

It even continued pouring down when we left Scotland on the 30th July 2005. We did a side trip to Peebles to see Neidpath Castle. The rain was just a drizzle, and we hoped for the rain to stop completely. (It didn’t. In fact, it was getting stronger.)

Yet, I share this image because it shows the state of many castles in Scotland. Some are in perfect condition, some are okay, and some are simply ruins. This one is still okay. (It takes a serious effort to keep a castle in a good condition, financially and mentally.)

Neidpath Castle dates back to the 12th century and has seen a wild history throughout the centuries. According to Wikipedia, the castle is still owned by the Earl of Wemyss. It is not open to the public, but it can be rented for weddings, events, and for filming and photoshoots. They offer luxury holiday appartments as well.

It would be great to re-visit Neidpath Castle on a sunny summer day and take a decent shot. 🙂
