The story behind the image
Recently I aquired this stunning photo by pioneer Albert Giesler in Eutin. It shows an early view across the Dieksee near Gremsmühlen (now Malente-Gremsmühlen) in Northern Germany. The print carries the handwritten date 1895 on the back, which is credible in my view. It is in very good condition with relatively few scratches and spots; it is sharp and the tones are well balanced.
It is a peaceful scene, and I like its details. On the left the upper-class couple in the rowing boat – where the lady steers the course! On the right a guy with a wicker basket, probably waiting for a fisherman to return with his catch. And in the back is a horsedrawn carriage in the water with a barrel that is being cleaned or filled in the lake by a man.
It’s difficult to determine the exact location of the photo. I think Giesler stood with his camera at the southern leg of the promenade. There is a wide road with a high wall. This could be the Diekseepromenade.
Anyway, Giesler shows Gremsmühlen and the Dieksee in an unspoilt way, a historic document that shows the early beginnings of Malente-Gremsmühlen’s rise to become the awesome wellness destination it still is today.
