The story behind the image
This photo from our family archive shows my grandmother, Edith Schweim (born Gehring). I never met her, at least I can’t remember a meeting, because she died when I was 18 months old. I would have loved to meet her in person as her life was full of interesting turns – born in Oldenburg (in Lower Saxonia, Germany), raised near at the Baltic Sea near Eutin, became a seamstress, moved to Kiel, met her future husband, and founded a successful business, overshadowed by two world wars. But she mastered all the challenges presented to her.
This portrait was probably taken by my mother in the 1950s in the garden of the family home in Kiel. I remember that this photo stood in a small frame in the living room of our appartment in Altenholz near Kiel, so my mother must have loved this photo. And I agree: Edith looks fit and healthy (despite the cigarette in her right hand), and she has that warm, adorable smile on her face.
Edith was born on this day in 1905 in Oldenburg, Lower Saxony, Germany.
