The story behind the image

Here’s another cabinet photo shot by photo pioneer Albert Giesler in Eutin. It is one of his earliest prints and carries the year 1887 embossed in the lower right corner. The print is in a terrible shape, compared to other prints of that period.

In 1892, Giesler was appointed the official photographer of the Oldenburg court, a fact that he mentioned prominently on all his photos and postcards. Giesler did not mark all his photos with a date, and the lack of mentioning his title “Hofphotograph” may help determine the creation period as “between 1886 and 1892”. 1886 because following his education as photographer around Germany, he moved back to his home town in that year to open his studio in Kielerstraße 6.

He was shooting portraits that – despite his attempt to apply his own style – were of a high quality but very standardized. But Giesler also captured the beauty of the area between Eutin and Oldenburg. These images are remarkable because they present a snapshot of time, in the truest sense.

For this photo he climbed the water tower of Eutin to shoot a panorama across the town. On the left is the bay of the lake Großer Eutiner See, on the right is the church St. Michaelis, and in the back is Eutin castle.

While even my edited version is not great by any means (as the photo is really damaged), I like it, especially considering that it is over 135 years old by now.
