The story behind the image
In 1999 we arrived at the Dublin airport and picked up our rental car. While we stayed for the first couple of days in Dublin, we also wanted to explore the surroundings of the city. One of the first trips brought us to Howth and Malahide, just north of the city.
Malahide is best known for its castle and gardens and dates back to 1185. We wanted to visit the castle and when we approached the town, we were greeted by this beautiful view of Hicks Tower, situated next to the Coast Road. It looks like a small French château, but is a former Martello tower from 1805, remodelled around 1911 as an Arts-and-Crafts style detached house. Patrick Comerford has published the description of his nice walk along the coast in Malahide where he explains the history of the building in detail.
In my photo I like the strong autumn colors of the leafs on the wall that contrast well with the blue sky.
We continued our trip to Malahide Castle which turned out to be an impressive experience.
