The story behind the image

I don’t know the lady on this photo, which belongs to a bigger lot of CdV photos that I acquired recently. It was probably shot around 1905 by Ferdinand Urbahns in his studio in Kiel in Germany. A handwritten note on the back says simply “the wife of the manager” (in German: “Die Frau des Verwalters”). Wow, that’s not a big help.

However, in the same lot there is another CdV showing a gentleman, shot in a different studio. The back has a handwritten note, too, apparently written by the same person: “The manager of the Hammer farm near Kiel” (in German: “Der Verwalter von Hof Hammer bei Kiel.”) – I think it is fair to assume that the two belong together, also considering the fact that there were very few photos of other people from Kiel in this lot.

The large Hammer farm can be traced back to the 13th century. However, most of the farmland was utilized after 1918 to erect parts of a new city quarter called Kiel Hammer. The small remaining property saw different uses over time until it became a farm for youth education.

Since 2012 there was a debate over the future use of the property, and at some point in time the decision was made to build an “inclusive” mini village of 120 appartments.

Kiel Wiki has more details (in German) as well as a pictures of the historic main building.

Anyway, I like the portrait of the lady and hope you do, too.

  1. I have an original framed photo taken by Ferd Urbana taken in 1900 in Kiel, of my great grandfather, his wife and three sons, one who became my grandfather. The family is Isaak Tannenwald his wife Henrietta and their three sons – Ernest, Bruno(my grandfather) and Hugo. The boys look to be between late teens and early to mid 20’s…I do not know if any of your photos are labeled.
