The story behind the image
Earlier today I shared the image of a young lady who was apparently the wife of the manager of the large Hammer farm near Kiel. At least, this is what a handwritten note on the back says. However, in the same lot there is another CdV showing a gentleman, photographed by a Theodor Kähler who had his studio in Kiel in Fleethörn 41/43.
The back has a handwritten note, too, apparently written by the same author: “The manager of the Hammer farm near Kiel” (in German: “Der Verwalter von Hof Hammer bei Kiel.”) – I think it is fair to assume that the two belong together, also considering the fact that there were very few photos of other people from Kiel in this lot.
So I thought it’s a good idea to present them both closely to each other. They look like a beautiful couple even if the times were difficult with WWI hitting the country in 1914. After the war, the farmland was utilized for a new city quarter called Kiel Hammer – a move that probably affected the role of the manager. The small remaining property saw different uses over time until it became a farm for youth education.
Anyway, I like the two portraits, especially when presented together.
