The story behind the image

If you are planning to travel along the Scottish west coast between Dumfries and Ayr we strongly recommend to leave the A77 at Turnberry for Culzean Castle. It is like the storybook castle of your dreams, situated on top of dramatic cliffs with superb views across the sea.

The castle was built from 1777 to 1792 based on an old fortified towercastle. This makes Culzean Castle probably the finest Georgian castle in Scotland. Be prepared to see a lot of tourists during high season – or come late in the afternoon as we did. There were just very few families there, and we did not even had to pay any fees!

This is the view from the main entrance and parking lot at Silver Avenue. The upfront sunlight was beautifully highlighting the edges of the castle walls and plants of the garden, but prevented showing the clear blue sky.

Looking at Google Streetview images taken in 2015 from almost the same location, I see that the owners removed some of the large trees (on the left and right). This has changed the view of the castle entirely. Now the walls and building are much more present and impressive than in the past.

A Google Streetview image taken from the same location shows that some large trees have been removed, changing the appearance of the castle entirely since 2005. Photo taken April 2015. © 2024 Google Maps
