The story behind the image

Here is another shot that shows sailing races on the Baltic Sea, possibly shot in spring 1927: Racing yachts speed elegantly across the water near Kiel. The strong wind has tilted the ships significantly and pushes them forward. I am amazed by the quality of the image.

By 1927, photo technology had advanced so much that exposure times up to 1/1000 sec. were possible. The limiting factor was the film speed, which was still pretty slow. This was compensated by the large size of the film, so that the images were more like a contact print than an enlargement. I guess that this shot might have been captured in bright daylight at 1/60 sec or so.

I think this is a stunning photo for sailing enthusiasts that illustrates the topic of (speed) sailing perfectly – a beautiful maritime decoration for your home or your office.
