The story behind the image
Here’s a photo from 2001 showing the remains of the former Berlin Wall that separated West Berlin from and East Berlin.
For Germans, this is an exciting location because the Berlin Wall is a scary historic monument showing how cruel the former regime in the ‘German Democratic Republic’ (GDR) actually was by fencing their people in. Yet, the wall is also a sign that such conditions can be overcome peacefully. It happened in 1989, and with this the old regime of the GDR was defeated.
More than two decades after taking the image, I am still impressed. The area has changed slightly. Importantly, the trees lurking over the wall have been removed. The parking lots on the right are mostly gone as well. The parking lots on the left are now reserved for tour buses. The entire location does not look as narrow and cramped as it was in 2001.
