The story behind the image
In 2020, the Corona Pandemic was in full swing in Germany and Bavaria. For some people one of the worst consequences of this was the cancellation of the Oktoberfest in that year. However, the breweries still needed to sell their beer – and so they found cool ways of promoting the Oktoberfest at home.
Here, for example, the Hofbräu München brewery provided gingerbread hearts with the simple slogan ‘Wies’n 2020 dahoam’ (lit. ‘Oktoberfest 2020 at home’) to retailers so they could decorate the beer crates with them.
For me, this worked, and I purchased a crate of beer of their (stronger) Oktoberfest beer to celebrate the fest at home with a decent beer or two.
A nice fun shot, yes, but not so nice memories when I think of the pandemic. By the way, the Oktoberfest had also been cancelled the year after. In 2022, the fest was pretty slow, because people were not sure whether it would be smart to go. Since 2023, however, it’s back to normal just as if nothing had ever happened. Go figure.
