The story behind the image
Gravedona is one of those organically grown towns around the Lago di Como in Italy. Every step shouts ‘history’, and life moves along calmly. That’s why we picked the town for a week of vacation in 2011.
In the town center, this history was clearly visible. At Piazza Garibaldi, right next to the ferry pier, we discovered the former Hotel d’Italie. Realtors would probably call this a ‘premium location’, but the building showed huge cracks all over the walls facing the Piazza, the balconies were uneven, and someone had apparently painted the wall to cover some of the cracks (but failed). It was a bit of a shock to see such a run-down building (which apparently has seen much better times) in this beautiful location.
The good news: since 2011, the building seems to have been renovated. Recent Streetview images show no cracks. What’s more, the name ‘Hotel d’Italie’ has been removed.
