The story behind the image
Lisbon in Portugal is an all-year destination for tourists. Even in December you have mild weather.
While exploring the city center we came across this statue showing writer Eça de Queirós (1845-1900). A year after his death, his friends suggested creating a monument in his honor. As a result, sculptor António Teixeira Lopes (1866-1942) designed a naturalistic sculptural group: de Queirós holds a half-naked female figure in his arms – an allegory to the fact that he became a protagonist in A Relíquia. This is confirmed by a quote from that book at the base of the set: “About the strong nudity of the truth, the diaphanous cloak of fantasy”.
Due to constant vandalism, the City Council of Lisbon removed the original statue from Largo Barão de Quintela and replaced it with a replica in 2001.
My photo shows the original.
