The story behind the image
The Vancouver Lookout is definitely one of Vancouver’s key attractions and a must-see for visitors of the city. It’s a viewing platform that resembles a giant airport tower sitting 168 meters (553 feet) high above the ground in the city center. Its 360° view across the city and its surroundings can only be called stunning.
I captured this photo towards south showing the stadium, Cambie Bridge and False Creek in the late afternoon. The sun was casting longer shadows already, enhancing the colors and contrast. That’s why I’d recommend to visit the Vancouver Lookout in the late afternoon.
Since 2002, Vancouver has further developed, and my photo can be used to visualize some of those changes:
- Following a snow accident, the stadium (‘BC Place’) had to be renovated and was upgraded as well. It now features a retractable roof. (Full story at Wikipedia.)
- Several high rise buildings have been built that now seem to prevent a direct line of sight to Cambie Bridge.
- I also spotted new high rises on the east side of the bridge beyond False Creek.
But this is to be expected from one of the best cities in the world (in my opinion) that just keeps on developing.
Vancouver? I need to return someday!
