The story behind the image
Here is a stunning shot from September 1999. It shows boats returning to Cork in Ireland.
We had visited the small community and lighthouse of Roches Point near Cork which sits on a small peninsula. On our way back to Cork I noticed two boats returning. The boats looked awesome in the bright sunlight that was reflected by the sea, and the waves created a beautiful pattern.
The brightness caused a harsh contrast, reducing the boats and opposite shore to silhouettes. I tried to capture this contrast – and succeeded! The image turned out exactly as intended, almost like a black and white image (despite using color slide film.) Fortunately, the scan did not require a lot of editing.
While it seems to be a rather gloomy image upon first glance, I think the bright sunlight offers some hope, too, so it’s really a portrait of both sides.
Yummy.
