The story behind the image

My parents were passionate gardeners in their sparetime, and when they finally found the ultimate lot, they enjoyed going straight to work, turning the untidy piece of land into a green oasis. My father would focus on vegetables while my mother took looked after the flowers. I rested in the folding chair supervising their work. 😉

I shot this image of my mother towards the end of the summer season in 1982. My mother wanted me to use the Polaroid camera she had bought a year before. While it was ultimately cool to see the results right away (well within a few minutes), the quality of the photos did not even remotely come close to what could be achieved with standard color negative film. Oh, and it turned out that the durability was also bad. Today, all the images from the Polaroid period show a terrible red/orange color cast.

In the summer of 1982, she had turned 40, and she had settled with life. The period between mid 1970s and early 1980s probably had been the best time of her life, and I love the fact that you can see her happiness in this image.

She was born on the 2nd July 1942 and would have celebrated her 82nd birthday today. Thinking of you.
