The story behind the image
Tuscany has many stunningly beautiful places beyond the tourist magnets Florence, Siena, and Pisa. One of these historic places is Cortona, situated about 40 minutes south of Arezzo.
On our way from Bologna to the west coast we made a detour via Arezzo and Cortona. It was yet another hot day, and so we actually enjoyed walking up to the town center through tiny steep streets that provided a lot of shadow and protection from the heat.
Cortona is as Italian as it can get and a good starting point for exploring Tuscany. If you need to cool down you may consider driving to the nearby Lago di Tarsimeno that invites for a bath (at Tuoro sul Trasimeno) and for long walks along the shore.
Cortona? A big fat like!
