The story behind the image
We were heading for Loch Ness. Of course, we did not expect to see Nessie (and we didn’t!) but we wanted to experience the beauty of this large Scottish Loch. And indeed, Loch Ness is beautiful, even with all the tourists clogging up the streets.
Urquhart Castle is the single most important tangible attraction of Loch Ness. It’s magnificently situated on the banks of Loch Ness. It was once one of Scotland’s largest castles, but lies in ruins today. Built in the 13th century, it always represented the Scots’ struggle for independence. Despite the huge numbers of tourists and hefty entrance fees, the castle is still worth at least a short stop on your trip.
I took this photo of Loch Ness from the car park near of the castle as the excursion vessel Jacobite Queen passed the remains of the castle. (At the time of writing, the vessel was up for sale and could be yours for just £75,000.)
I like this photo because it looks so peaceful. All visible tourists in the image are on the vessel – while we were truly surrounded by tourists from all over the world. Even better, I caught a moment where the sun was peeking out between the clouds.
Nice.
