The story behind the image
Yesterday I shared an image showing the passenger ferry Langeoog IV at the harbour of Bensersiel in Germany. Here’s a second shot of that location and day. This time it is a wider shot that shows the surroundings of the pier in Bensersiel.
Shot in 1957, the harbour still looks in its infancy. The passenger ferry, Langeoog IV, was put in service in 1927 for the service between Bensersiel and Langeoog. Today she is named Wilsun and located in Rotterdam. The harbour itself does not show a lot of supporting infrastructure. The luggage of the passengers has been placed on the road, waiting for the next leg of their transport.
From 1843 Bensersiel was the harbour for ferries to the island of Langeoog which created economical growth and triggered further investments, most importantly the train line from 1888. In 1905 regular beach operations were started, and the village became more popular over time.
