The story behind the image
I recently discovered a section of the family archive that I had ignored for no specific reason. Apart from several personal photos it contains some beautiful and authentic impressions from the North Sea coast near Oldenburg in Lower Saxonia.
This image shows harbour of Bensersiel. It is interesting to see already the first sailing yacht (on the left) being prepared for a trip. The building behind the yacht is the Hotel Benser-Hof – originally Harms Hotel – which has been replaced by a modern building around 2003. (At the time of writing, it still operates as a hotel.) The houses on the right have been replaced, too. Just the small house next to the hotel has remained and is home to the Stürhus restaurant today.
From 1843 Bensersiel was the harbour for ferries to the island of Langeoog which created economical growth and triggered further investments, most importantly the train line from 1888. In 1905 regular beach operations were started, and the village became more popular over time.
