The story behind the image

This image shows the impressive fleet of fishing boats at the harbour of Neuharlingersiel at the German North Sea coast. Shot by a relative on a sunny day in August 1957, it certainly qualifies as a historic document because it tells the story of a village that has been engaged in fishery for a long time.

My first thought when I saw the image was: “Uh, I guess the fleet is gone by now. It probably is a shadow of the past and a tourist attraction today.” But I was wrong. Recent images of the harbour show several boats that appear to be in good condition. Their number has decreased for sure, but you can take a look at this page (in German) to find out how many of them are actively used for fishing. Yet, I like the sight.

Looking at the buildings, I see just small changes. The two houses on the right have apparently been replaced by modern buildings that mingle extremely well with the existing houses and styles.

All in all, I think that the community of Neuharlingersiel has done a fantastic job to preserve the charms of the past and to present the village in a fresh way today (without looking like a museum.)

Neuharlingersiel definitely on my bucket list now. 🙂
