The story behind the image
On our trip from Windhoek to the Etosha National Park in Namibia we stopped at Tsumeb which is known for its mining industry which started in 1905 when the first mine was commercially deployed in Tsumeb. Quickly, the city became a mine city and grew significantly. You can still admire the De Wet shaft head frame in the main street. The mine was operational for several decades, until it stopped production in 1996.
Just a few steps down the President Street I saw this old Vokswagen Beetle. When it was new, decades ago, it probably was painted in bright yellow, but here it presented itself just in a matte yellow. It had seen better times for sure but confirmed the famous German Volkswagen ad of the 1960s: “It runs, and runs, and runs, and runs.”
