The story behind the image

Yesterday I shared an image from the family archive that had been taken in September 1943 in Eutin, Germany.

A while ago I found this postcard image showing the patio of the café Fissauer Fährhaus which is situated at the Kellersee in Ostholstein. Sent in August 1941, the photo was probably taken on a slow day in the spring of that year. Chairs and tables wait for guests and the whole location looks tidy and beautiful.

I like imagining how my ancestors sat down at one of the tables to enjoy a nice afternoon and forget the pains of the war.

By the way, the postcard carries some (German) copy on the back:

Café Fissauer Fährhaus
directly at the Kellersee · Owner Eugen Scheve
Phone Eutin 388 · Magnificent lake patio
Own pastry shop · Motorboat pier
Large car parking lot

This suggests that the postcard was produced by the photographer on behalf of the café and sold by SImonsen across the region.

Over the years, the venue changed hands several times. Today, it still operates as a café and restaurant. Sadly, at the time of writing there was no official website available.

Photographer Julius Simonsen was born in 1876 in a small town between Schleswig and Flensburg. A son of a butcher, he originally was trained to become a merchant but decided to move into the photo business at the age of 20. He joined the studio of L. Christensen in Oldenburg in Holstein and acquired the business just four years later, in 1899. During his lifetime, Simonsen photographed all the beautiful spots in northern Germany and sold his images as postcards under the label Kunstverlag Julius Simonsen.

Nikolaus Julius Simonsen died on the 29th October 1943 in Oldenburg in Holstein at the age of 67. His son Hans Julius continued the family business after his death.
