The story behind the image
In the summer of 1943, my grandparents tried to minimize the burdens of the war that had their hometown, Kiel in Germany, which had experienced frequent air raids by then.
At first, they spent six weeks in Sankt-Peter-Ording, a quiet little village at the North Sea coast. By the end of August 1943 the family moved to Malente Gremsmühlen, about 40 kilometer east of Kiel. While the parents would return to Kiel to look after the house and the family business, the kids – Inga (my mother) and Editha – would stay with the nanny, Mrs. Irmgard, in Malente. My grandparents would come over regularly to see the kids.
My photo shows an excursion of the family to the Fissauer Fährhaus which is situated in Eutin at the Kellersee in Ostholstein. Here, Mrs. Irmgard fed my mother on the patio of the restaurant. Editha stands in the front.
