The story behind the image

Ship photography is exciting but can be quite difficult. Exciting, because you get the chance to spend a day on the water and capture awesome, sometimes action-packed maritime images. Difficult, because your ground may be shaky and constantly moving. The light can be challenging, too.

For no specific reason I took an image of the freighter Helgaland as it passed Laboe on the Kieler Förde, probably on its way to enter the Kiel Canal in Holtenau.

The Helgaland is a Sietas Type 172, and Wikipedia has more than you might possibly want to know about this type (in German). The ship was delivered to Petra Heinrich, Jork, in May 2003, so it was just a little over a year old when I spotted it in August 2004. That might be the reason why I took a photo, by the way. The Helgaland looked modern, new, bright, and clean. The sailing yacht in front of the large ship shows the size of the ship.

At the time of writing, the ship is active as Candelaria B.

I like the photo, because it illustrates a perfect summer day on the water in my hometown.
