The story behind the image
We were in Paris in 1988 and explored the city. When we came to the FNAC store at the Champs-Élysées, we were seriously stunned. Never before we had seen such a large combination of book and media store. This was heaven for us as we were book and media lovers! (You see, we were from Northern Germany, and the largest stores we knew at the time were traditional retail stores like Karstadt or Hertie. These were large, too, but the difference at FNAC was the focus of the portfolio.)
It had been an exhausting day, and we sat down on the carpet floor in the lobby, near the main entrance. People were rushing by or inquiring at the information desk. I carefully placed the camera on the floor and (secretly) took a long exposure shot.
Admittedly, the image is quite grainy and – due to the long exposure time – not totally sharp and crisp. But it shows the dynamics of the place.
Heck, I still like the result.
