The story behind the image
In the morning we boarded the ferry Queen of Chilliwack in Port Hardy at the northern tip of Vancouver Island in British Columbia. Ahead of us was a 12-hour trip on the so-called Discovery Passage towards Bella Coola on the mainland of British Columbia.
It started with heavy weather. It was rather cold and did not really invite for a sunbath on the deck. At the Queen Charlotte Sound we directly faced the Pacific Ocean where no islands protected our ship, and huge waves were constantly bashing against the ship. (And when writing this, I can almost hear the captain laughing: “Huge waves? That’s nothing, mate!”) For us, it was quite an experience anyway!
Once we had reached the islands again, however, the weather cleared up and the remaining trip was fantastic. We were very closely sailing along the shoreline with several stunning views, including some ad-hoc whale watching.
In the evening we arrived in Bella Coola and headed to our pre-booked B&B, pretty tired from the long day at sea.
