The story behind the image

This studio portrait from the family archive shows my grand uncle Arthur Wilke. It’s undated, and neither photographer nor studio is mentioned on the print.

Uncle Arthur was born in Kiel, Germany, in 1898. During the First World War he served the Jagdstaffel 300 and was announced to be lost in 1919, but he survived the war and returned to his home town to become a merchant.

He married in 1926 my great aunt Irmgard Marie Gehring, where he joined my family tree.

This image shows Arthur probably around 1923, and I like the confidence in Arthur’s face.

It is a postcard print, a technique that had become a trend back in the early 1920s and that had been quickly replacing the traditional CdV prints and cabinet photos that were mounted on hard cardboard. This print, however, must have been put to an album in the past (as there are remains of glue on the back, and it got never sent) before it was put into the archive.

Photo studios were booming in Kiel in that period, so it is very likely that it was captured in Kiel. Too bad that there is no hint on the photographer.
