The story behind the image

Here is an early art shot from my 1988 trip to Portugal. It shows a detail of the sand pattern created by wind and water at the Praia de Alvor. It was illuminated by the late afternoon sun which emphasized the pattern by harsh shadows.

I like the combination of detail (down to the single sand corns), simplicity (just sand, just one color), and utter chaos (there is no pattern in the pattern.) The image triggers the viewer to take a closer look.

The design ideas below confirm (to me) that it works very well as a wall decoration and highlight in various situations.
