The story behind the image
This sturdy yet comfortable Renault Mégane has been our trusted companion for our three week trip to South Africa in 2004.
It had been our first trip to Sub-Sahara Africa, and we thought it might be good to start small (in terms of adventures, especially unexpected ones) and explore the Garden Route, that’s the area between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth (now Gqeberha). All our travel guide books stated that we’d do well with a traditional sedan car as the roads are usually in very good conditions down here. And we can confirm this impression. The only gravel roads we encountered were in the Addo Elephant Park, and some short pathways to get to a B&B or attraction.
And the Renault served us well.
My photo shows the car probably at the Addo Elephant Park which almost entirely had gravel roads. I wanted to capture a dramatic situation – a steep and narrow gravel road – just as a souvenir. But it was far less dramatic than it looks. 🙂
For the Garden Route, consider renting a standard car. For all other areas of the country we recommend to go for a sturdy 4×4. This recommendation is valid for Namibia and Botsuana as well.
