The story behind the image

We visited the Cape of Good Hope on a day in the South African summer. The drive to the Cape (via Muizenberg, St. James, Fish Hoek, and SImon’s Town) was stunning and we stopped several times to enjoy the views and take photos. Turn after turn we discovered new sights.

The Cape – or rather The Cape Point Nature Reserve – was busy with tourists who were mostly climbing the path that lead to the lighthouse that sits 238 meters high above the water. And taking photos at the official sign at the beach.

The lighthouse, by the way, is not in use anymore and has been replaced by a smaller automatic one that is located below the old lighthouse.

For this wide angle shot I walked the small path on the eastern side towards the new lighthouse and took a look back. The lighthouse was lurking over the cliff. The rocks were dipped into harsh shadows created by the morning sun. And the massive waves that rolled in from the west were tiny and could be barely heard from here.

Nice.
