The story behind the image
Back in 1957 one part of the family traveled from Oldenburg, Germany, to Alicante, Spain – with a small car. It was a genuine road and, back then, a giant trip. They drove all the way from northern Germany through France and Spain to get to the south.
The photos of this trip are mostly black and white and still in a good condition. The early color photographs are much worse and a challenge to restore.
So, this photo was captured exactly 67 years ago in Nancy, France. It shows the Hotel de la Meuse and the Porte Stanislas close to the city center. I think the key topic of the image was the hotel, because it sits in the center of the image. Also, a handwritten comment on the back of the print mentions the name of the hotel, but not the Porte Stanislas. It’s fair to assume that they stayed in the hotel.
The hotel and the parking lots in front of it are long gone. Today, there is a modern building with a traffic island. However, the Porte Stanislas – built in 1761 – still exists in all its beauty.
