The story behind the image
The Port of Hamburg is an enormous maze. Hundreds of berths have been cramped close to the city center, and day-in, day-out ships are arriving from all over the world with valuable goods.
That’s why the German legislation requires harbour pilots (or “Hafenlotsen” in German) for certain ships intending to enter the port. In other words: foreign ships may not enter the port without a properly trained pilot on board. The independent association of maritime and harbour pilots in Hamburg serves this need around the clock and regardless of weather conditions. They are doing a great job. (Read more about the association here.)
Their home is this historical building next to the Elbe river. I shot this photo on a beautiful afternoon in summer. The super wide angle dwarfs the building, yet the composition puts the full attention on it, enhanced by the beautiful blue sky and the river water.
I love this image.
