SUMMER 1943 – On a windy day, Edith Schweim (1905-1966) poses for a photo at the beach promenade in St.-Peter-Ording in Germany in a very good mood. © Mark Zanzig/zanzig.com
The story behind the image
My grandparents spent six weeks in the summer of 1943 in Sankt-Peter-Ording, a quiet little village at the North Sea coast of Germany. This enabled them to get away from the increasingly difficult situation in Kiel. The city had been experiencing frequent air raids and they simply wanted to get the kids out of the city.
Life in Sankt-Peter was completely different, despite being just 120 kilometers away from Kiel. This photo shows Edith at the beach promenade. The time-out from the terrible war was welcome and much needed, and she could forget about the worries for a while. At the age of 37, Edith was looking really good, stylish, and relaxed.
