The story behind the image
We stayed for a couple of nights in Ucluelet at the west coast of Vancouver Island in Canada. After having slept fitfully the first night we decided to book a whalewatching trip to the Broken Island Group situated in the south-east of Ucluelet.
Every participant got matching life suits that kept us warm and conveniently included the life vest. In fact, it was quite hot in there while we were still standing at the pier in Ucluelet. On the Pacific, however, it was very good to wear the suit.
Our guide, Lance Blackwell, turned out to be a perfect guide for our excursion, and he told us a lot about the wildlife in the region. During our trip we saw several gray whales, countless sea lions, and this Bald Eagle who had occupied one of the tiny islands watching the sea.
Shot from the distance from a shaky Zodiak with a non-stabilized lens, the quality of the image is just so-so by todays standards, but it was more than OK back in 2002, and even today, I’d consider it good for smaller prints.
In any event, I like the composition and colors.
P.S.: Lance runs a B&B today, the Anchors Inn in Ucluelet.
