The story behind the image
I have been able to obtain yet another beautiful cabinet photo shot by photo pioneer Albert Giesler. This print is dated 1893 in the lower right corner and it is in a good condition, compared to other prints of that period.
In his studio he was shooting portraits that – despite his attempt to apply his own style – were pretty much standardized. But Giesler also shot a series called “Ost-Holstein” where he captured the beauty of the area between Eutin and Oldenburg. His images are remarkable because they present a snapshot of time, in the truest sense. Little did he know how much some of the places would change in just a century.

This view, for example, is impossible today. Gremsmühlen has changed forever when the Intermar Hotel was built in the 1960s. But even without this concrete bunker, the town grew due to its popularity, and countless houses have been built where there were just fields in 1893.
