The story behind the image
My grandparents spent six weeks in the summer of 1943 in Sankt-Peter-Ording, a quiet village at the west coast of Germany – and far away from the increasingly difficult situation in Kiel where frequent air raids made life quite dangerous. Their biggest concern was to get the kids out of the city. Life in Sankt Peter was entirely different, despite being just 120 kilometers away from Kiel.
This photo shows Edith at the beach promenade as she watches the waves rolling in. At the age of 37, Edith was looking really good and stylish. For this photo she did not show her warm smile, but a serious and concerned look.
